Caring for Equine Dental Instruments

Equine dental instruments work in a demanding environment. Residue, moisture and mechanical load all shorten the life of a tool that is not cared for.

After each use, rinse instruments, clean working ends with a soft brush, and dry them fully before storage. Moving parts on speculums and forceps benefit from a light instrument lubricant.

Inspect edges and joints regularly. A pick that has lost its point or a speculum with a stiff ratchet should be serviced before it becomes a problem during a procedure. Properly maintained, professional instruments give years of reliable service.
